Feel Powerless to Change? You Are More Powerful Than You Realize!

So often we feel we are utterly powerless to do anything about a problem or situation. This can be especially true when it relates to improving your health in any way, whether it be changing long-standing habits or resolving physical problems.

We’ve been so conditioned to believe that we cannot experience healing without the help of a doctor, drug or procedure outside ourselves, that we just assume we are powerless. That becomes our belief and our perception of the situation – whatever it may be. Therefore, it becomes our truth and our reality.

That could not be further from the truth! God has given us three “power tools” that we sorely neglect to our own detriment. Those “power tools” are: the power of free will; the power of imagination and the power of speech.

When we intentionally, consistently exercise and put these tools to use, the results in all areas of our lives can be amazing. Genesis 11:6 in the Amplified Bible says this: “And the Lord said, Behold, they are one people and they have all one language; and this is only the beginning of what they will do, and now nothing they have imagined they can do will be impossible for them.”

Two of the power tools were mentioned there – speech and imagination – but the third is implied. Imagination combines our thinking and power to visualize and dream. But, you first have to choose how you will see the problem or situation. That’s the power of free will. You get to make that choice every time.

Then no matter what it is we are in need of, the last two tools are at our disposal: we think about it correctly, visualize and dream it as we want it to be and speak about it as if it was already true. We are created in the image of God Himself. He created this entire universe and all we can see just that way (see Genesis 1). If it’s good enough for Him – it’s good enough for me!

So what does it have to do with improving your health? Here are a couple of examples: let’s say you are trying to lose weight, but every day you think about cheeseburgers and ice cream and every time you take a bite of your salad you say, “I can never lose weight, I don’t know why I bother?” What do you think will happen? I can guarantee it’s only a matter of time before you give in to a fast food attack and forget about losing weight altogether.

What if you have been diagnosed with diabetes or cancer? Your mindset is critical. If you “see” yourself wasting away and dying or becoming sicker and sicker, your mind is set to work on making what you believe into your reality! Even though it’s the opposite of what you desire.

You can choose to believe the prognosis given you – or you can choose not to. You can choose to believe your body is fearfully and wonderfully made and it has power to heal itself. You can choose life (Deut. 30:19); then picture yourself getting stronger and healthier and speak only words that agree with that picture.

Who knows, you just may still be alive 25+ years from now as Joel Osteen’s mother, Dodie Osteen, is. She was diagnosed with liver cancer at least that long ago and sent home to die – and she is healthy and cancer-free to this day. You’re never powerless.

You have unlimited power. You just have to be aware of it and choose to use it properly.
