Let’s apply this to losing weight. Unless you’ve been living under a rock you are well aware that obesity is a serious problem in our country and that it increases your risk for heart disease, diabetes, cancer and more. That’s the “information” part – we KNOW being overweight is a problem and we KNOW we must lose weight. But, is that enough?
Evidently not, otherwise would so many of us still be overweight? So what’s missing? I believe information alone, the knowledge of what needs to be done is only step one. Knowing HOW to actually apply it in your life in a concrete way, is the second and perhaps more critical piece of this puzzle.
We can have all the facts about a situation – in this case – the need to lose weight. However if we don’t have a practical plan – step by step directions on how to achieve this goal, the information is never transformed into action.
Knowing what to do but having no clue where to begin and how to apply that knowledge is demoralizing. It causes people to become overwhelmed and frustrated. The end result is they give up and nothing changes.
Having a blueprint – a plan to follow step by step is critical. Having someone to encourage you, direct you and hold you accountable makes all the difference. It helps keep you on track, moving forward, making progress.
According to research – directions are more motivating than just information. Plans that focus on changing behavior – making lasting, lifestyle changes – was proven time and time again to result in long-term success.
So my suggestion is find out what you need to do and get help applying it to your life.
