In working with clients who want to lose weight, the issue of accountability becomes very important. While you have to take responsibility for your choices and actions and be accountable to yourself – having someone else to be accountable to is a powerful motivator. Just knowing you will have to check in with someone – whether it’s a coach, personal trainer, diet buddy – whatever, can be the difference between skipping your workout or powering through or passing on the cookies at the office!
I have one client who says she finds it helps her to stop and think – would Ann want me to eat this? She checks in each morning and very honestly will share whatever she did the night before – good or bad. I clearly see there have been more and more “good” days as we’ve progressed in this coaching cycle. If you don’t have anyone you feel comfortable being accountable to – you can find a health coach who can walk with you every step of the way.
The other important factor is having the right support system surrounding you. Research has suggested that the people who surround you on a daily basis can either help you lose or maintain
weight or they can make you gain weight! A good question to ask is: Are my family and friends encouraging my efforts or sabotaging them? It may be very subtle – but you have to be aware of this. This applies to your immediate family and even your work environment.
If you find you don’t have a strong support system around you physically – you can join an online weight loss support group. There are several really good ones and this can definitely increase your chances of success.
