Is Your Doctor Getting the Whole Truth?

Prescription drugsMy dad is almost 87 years old and as he has had to address different health issues, he is adamantly opposed to considering anything other than what his doctor recommends. It can actually be funny sometimes. When he was losing weight and went through every test known to man and was told there was nothing wrong with him, I suggested he just simply might not be eating enough. Of course, he disagreed. I sat with him and had him tell me what he’d eaten the day before and calculated the calories to see if he was eating enough to even sustain his present weight – and of course he wasn’t.

He felt that there had to be something else wrong and went back to his gastroenterologist. The doctor told him there were no other tests to do and said he probably wasn’t eating enough. Well when dad came to visit the following week he shared that piece of wisdom with me as if he’d never heard it before! When I reminded him I had suggested the same thing the week before his response was – “Yes, but you’re not a doctor.” All too true, dad!

That brings me to this alarming article from Dr. Mercola. The doctor also put my dad on several different blood pressure medications. Each time my dad asked me to look up any side effects and had to change meds several time because they made him feel awful. I gave him some information to read by a naturopathic doctor I trust who explained that his blood pressure for his age was perfectly normal. Furthermore, taking these medications not only cause negative side effects, but only serve to extend life by a few days when taken over time. His response was, “You’re not a doctor – what do you know?”

Well according to this article, most doctors themselves may not know much more than I since the results of drug trials are published more often when they are positive leading doctors to recommend medications that not only may not be effective but may be dangerous.

So as I have long said, your health in entirely in your hands – the decisions are yours to make and being well informed about the truth is the first step.

Are you more likely to use a drug simply on a doctor’s recommendation or do you research other alternatives?

  1. Ann,
I’ve said this before — YOU are better than a doctor!!! You look at everything and aren’t just trying to match a symptom with a drug which is what it seems that doctors are trained to do these days.

I had a doctor tell me I was going to die if I didn’t take the meds she prescribed. That was quite a few years ago and as you can see I’m still alive and well! She based her recommendations on limited information and on the results of one or two tests that could have been abnormal for a wide variety of reasons.

I strongly recommend getting multiple opinions from a variety of TYPES of “doctors”.

    Have a Victorious Day!

Thank you for saying that Marianne! It pays to take responsibility for your own health and not just blindly trust anyone without doing your own research.

  2. I agree with Marianne – I’ll pick you over a doctor anyway! If you personally know a doctor, you’ll know they are usually stressed, sleep-deprived and short on time. How do they have time to keep up with the best options anyways? We have even gone so far as purchased a medications for my daughter, then get home and think about the side effects and not give to her in one case. Just didn’t see the benefit for the particular situation she had – we realized the doctor was throwing something against the wall to see if it stuck.

Ditto, big time to what Marianne and Michael said! Whenever I have a health or nutritiously related question, guess who I ask? Yep! Her name is “Ann Musico!” — It doesn’t always take a doctor to know things, you just have to do a little research and know the right people to ask…

What a great story Ann! I run into the same type of thinking many times with my grown children. I have to bite my tongue not to say, I told you so… Keep it coming with all the great information on health. I love your philosophy. Unfortunately, most people go to doctors to get a pill to get better. I imagine if a doctor suggests exercise or change your diet, people tend to discount them as well because they don’t want to hear that.

You’re probably right about people discounting the suggestion that they can actually do something themselves – sounds too simple to most I guess (unfortunately). Thanks for reading and for the comment, Lynne.
