Just about every other day there are results of a new study or new research telling us something we believed to be true about health isn’t really true. For instance the recent NY Times article “Don’t Take Your Vitamins” telling us vitamin supplements are a waste of time and money. Or that vitamin E has no positive effect on heart health. Or any number of other studies. We rarely see the ones talking about how dangerous pharmaceutical drugs are though – because that hits certain pocketbooks.
I want to highlight a study you haven’t heard anything about unless you get Dr. Jonny Bowden’s newsletter. He had a great article about “The Bellagio Report on Healthy Agriculture, Healthy Nutrition, Healthy People.”
You can read both his article and the report at the links above so I won’t go into great detail but I LOVE it when research agrees with what I have been doing and saying for years! Their conclusions were:
Sugar – and fructose in particular – are the most dangerous dietary problem facing us. They are addictive and at the root of most of the most serious diseases like cancer and heart disease. Contrary to popular belief, sugar is not just empty calories and fructose is not just like sugar!
Proper balance of healthy fats more omega 3’s and less omega 6 fats. This was especially gratifying since I’ve long been saying to avoid vegetable oils and commercial salad dressings. For so many years a healthy saturated fat like coconut oil has been demonized and replaced with unhealthy vegetable oils and fake fats like margarine.
It is wonderful to see common sense and truth come to the forefront. It always goes back to what I am continually saying: get back to basics and eat fresh, whole foods in a form closest to how God created them.
