Healthy Living: A Unique Way to Relieve Stress

gardeningThere are many ways to manage and relieve stress including meditation, prayer, EFT and other types of energy medicine, exercise, reading and deep breathing. Stress is dangerous because we know it impacts our health so powerfully in a negative way when it becomes chronic. And with our hectic lifestyles, chronic stress is something we all must deal with if we truly want to be healthy and whole.

Well I read this this study that compared the stress relieving properties of either reading or gardening and found that gardening reduced the amount of stress hormone, cortisol more effectively than reading, as well as restoring positive mood well after gardening. Mood after reading deteriorated.

Gardeners were also found to be more positive overall and to enjoy more feelings of life satisfaction and well-being. Even more exciting, soil contains a natural antidepressant that had a similar effect on the brain that drugs like Prozac provide! Who knew dirt could make you happier?

Add to that growing your own food saves you money, ensures the quality of your food and even is a good form of exercise and you have a total win here! No matter how much room you have, you can grow a garden – even in large pots or containers. We are approaching peak gardening season – so why not plant a garden and enjoy a happier, less stressful life?

    Working in the soil is therapeutic. I used to enjoy gardening, but after a couple of episodes with poison ivy I don’t as much. More flowers than fruits and vegetables. The critters—birds, deer, bunnies—got those before we did! I certainly enjoy the fragrance of fresh flowers in the house. I think they do something for us too.

      Absolutely Debbie! The fragrance and colors of fresh flowers does change the entire atmosphere. And as for poison ivy – I don’t
      blame you for pulling back. We have so far been fortunate that the little fence my husband rigged has kept the critters out
