There are so many simple, easy ways we can boost our moods when we are feeling blah. Just spending time outside in nature and the sunshine is usually enough to do it for me and it’s been well documented as a very effective mood-booster. Lending a helping hand to someone else is another great way to lift yourself out of a funk and do good at the same time. Exercise – just moving your body in some way – is a great way to release those feel-good brain chemicals. I even wrote in a recent post about how just smiling, can release endorphins and boost your mood.
Well today I have more good news! By choosing certain foods, you can actually eat yourself happy. It’s no secret, or it shouldn’t be, that how you nourish your body can powerfully impact your mood. Numerous studies show too much sugar is linked to increased depression.
It comes as no surprise that dark chocolate is loaded with bliss producing compounds. None of us needed any studies to prove the truth of that I’m sure!
Perhaps it will surprise you to know that studies have linked dark, leafy greens, which are high in folate, to reduced risk of depression.
Coffee and green tea have also been studied for their ability to improve brain health and mood. Coffee appears to have anti-depressive effects and green tea’s theanine is proven to be calming, reducing stress and anxiety.
We know sunshine lifts our spirits. It also provided mood boosting vitamin D. One of the few food sources of that vitamin are mushrooms! They are also a great source of selenium, a mineral that’s been linked to depression when levels are low.
