We’ve all read about how pets can improve health and mood. What could be better than being greeted by a wildly enthusiastic puppy who is ecstatic to see you, even if you just went outside for 3 minutes to get the mail?
Emotionally that unconditional love and total acceptance is a gift we rarely get anywhere else. Besides that, it’s been documented that pet owners usually exercise more, have higher self-esteem and deal better with social rejection than their non-pet owning counterparts. Pet ownership has also been linked to lower blood pressure, cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
In this day and age of chronic stress, pets confer yet another unique and really fascinating benefit upon their owners. The Pedigree dog food company tested the heart rates of dogs and their owners when they were together and apart and the findings are, well, heart-warming!
As you can see in the short video above, when dogs and owners were separated their heart rates showed effects of stress and anxiety. When they were reunited their heart rates calmed down and began beating in sync. The dogs felt safe and happy when they were with their owners and that actually impacted the owner’s heart rate for the better as well.
Does it surprise you to know our pets can have such an impact on us?
