Nutrition: Read This if You Still Drink Coke

Sodas like Coke are definitely not healthy. They’re loaded with high fructose corn syrup which is an especially strong driver of obesity, heart disease and diabetes. It is an especially dangerous sweetener because unlike glucose and other forms of sugar, it is the only one directly metabolized by the liver and which is almost immediately converted to fat.

Add to that it has phosphoric acid (all sodas do) which breaks down bone tissue! And if you were thinking drinking sugar-free Coke is the answer – think again. Those artificial sweeteners have their own laundry list of very dangerous side effects.

I found this infographic about what happens to your body one hour after drinking a can of coke absolutely alarming – especially since so many children drink soda! I believe it speaks for itself and says more than I could about why you should avoid these types of beverages.

    This is really scary, Ann. Even scarier, the people I know who drink soda, drink at lease six cans a day. I wonder what the long term effects are on the body. It can’t be good!

      Holly it is really alarming especially when children are allowed to drink as much as they want. I worked for a man whose kids ate terribly and drank soda all day long (they used to come and stay in the office in the summer – fun stuff!) Anyway they were all overweight and the mom asked me what she could do to help her kids get healthier and I said I would start by gradually weaning them off all the sodas (diet no less) and replacing it with water. She said – Oh I can’t do that – they’ll badger me constantly. Seems some people do not want to be parents. I also had a girlfriend who drank a 6 pack of diet Pepsi daily for years. Fast forward to today which is about 12 years later. I warned her about the dangers and to her credit she did stop drinking them but I think perhaps the damage was already done. She has had serious health problems doctors have not been able to get to the root of for years until finally they found a tumor on her pituitary gland. We’ve been lied to for so long people don’t realize how much damage these seemingly “benign” beverages can do.

        And you’re right about being lied to. How would the average person know? It’s diet soda for goodness sakes, sounds good to me.

        Many of the foods in grocery stores should have warning labels like cigarettes and alcohol.
