No that isn’t a typo in the title of this blog post. I meant to spell it that way! In order to breathe freely and fully you need a strong, healthy diaphragm. The diaphragm is a muscle and as we age, the function of this very important muscle declines, which can result in breathing problems, impaired airway clearance and a decreased quality of life, particularly in older adults. With COVID-19 still hanging over our heads as we move into cold and flu season this becomes especially important.
Studies have shown that nitrates can improve muscle function of the diaphragm, improving the outlook for older adults with respiratory infections like COVID-19. One of the easiest and most effective ways to include nitrates in your daily regimen is by including beets. Beets, which are one of the richest sources of nitrates, have been shown to improve muscle contractions in the diaphragm, thus helping to improve breathing.
Improved lung function is not the only benefit beets provide. They have also been shown to lower blood pressure, reduce inflammation, enhance exercise stamina, and support detoxification among other things.
I happen to enjoy eating raw beets grated into a salad or roasted beets as a side dish. Quite often I find them already roasted and ready to eat as you see in the above photo. If you don’t particularly like this delicious and nutritious veggie or preparing it, here’s another way to enjoy the benefits, which I do regularly. You can include a scoop of this in your green drink or smoothie. It’s sweet and delicious and is a very easy way to enjoy the benefits of nitrates for lung health.
If you don’t eat beets, what stops you? Would you consider including them knowing how they improve lung function?
