Obesity and cardiovascular disease are two chronic health conditions many in our country are dealing with. Is it possible that just one tablespoon of coconut oil daily could make a positive difference. That’s exactly what this study found.
Please do not misunderstand. There is no magic bullet, no magic pill or food that will do it all. You still have to eat high quality, whole, one ingredient, nutrient-dense foods that agree with your particular makeup, exercise, get adequate sleep and rest.. But including one tablespoon of extra virgin coconut oil has been proven effective in increasing HDL cholesterol and decreasing waist circumference (abdominal fat, a risk factor in heart disease.
The study was conducted in 3 phases. In phase one, a three month period, 136 participants were put on a standardized diet. From the third month onward, the 116 who completed the first phase were place in two groups: 22 remained on the diet, and 92 were put on the diet plus one tablespoon (about 14 grams) daily of extra virgin coconut oil.
The results of the the three-month coconut oil intervention showed that the coconut group saw a decrease in all six of the bodily parameters measured, including weight, BMI, waist circumference, neck perimeter, systolic and diastolic blood pressure as well as an increase in HDL cholesterol.
Abdominal obesity, is a serious risk factor for cardiovascular disease. In fact, a 2007 study found that of three risk factors evaluated for heart attack, namely, abdominal obesity, abnormal lipids, and smoking, abdominal obesity was the most powerful: 48.5%, versus 40.8% for abnormal lipids, and 38.4% for smoking.
Considering these two factors, any safe, diet-based lifestyle modification that can safely raise HDL-C cholesterol, and reduce abdominal fat and related parameters such as BMI and increase HDL, is a huge win.
