“An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” We’ve all heard that old adage and apples can be very healthy if they agree with your metabolism. I happen to love apples and we are approaching apple season so I thought this was especially timely information.
As with all foods, the specific type is what matters when it comes to your particular makeup. In general apples are known to be excellent antioxidant foods, good at regulating blood sugar because of their fiber content and therefore, good weight loss foods.
Apples are good sources of fiber and phenolic compounds, both of which have been found to be protective against disease. The fiber resists digestion and when it reaches the colon it feeds healthy gut bacteria producing short chain fatty acids, which have numerous health benefits.
Studies show eating more apples (actually 2 apples a day for 2 weeks) actually increased the number of good bacteria. The fiber in apples was found to alter two strains of bacteria, Clostridiales and Bacteriodes, both are known to influence gut health and general health.
But is there a particular type of apple that’s better than others for weight loss? According to scientists at Washington State University crisp, tart Granny Smiths are the ones to choose. They have more non-digestible fiber than other types. The research found that when obese mice were fed the Granny Smith variety their gut flora changed to that of lean mice, which helps lower the risk of disorders accompanying obesity.
