Surprising Practice for Younger Skin

You might be expecting it to be some serum or cream or a specific supplement you can add to your regimen; perhaps a different cleansing routine or a new mask or exfoliator. Those all might make perfect sense when thinking about doing something to keep your skin looking young and healthy. That’s why what this plastic surgeon considers the best thing we can do to stay looking young and healthy is such a surprise.

He says the best thing you can do for younger looking skin is practice intermittent fasting! Here’s why:

This way of eating triggers autophagy which is the process whereby your body cleans out old, damaged cells making room for new, healthy ones. Among the many varied benefits of intermittent fasting which include blood sugar control, weight loss,, improved brain health and longevity, we can now add healthier skin.

Every cell in your body responds to this cleansing and renewal process, including skin cells.

According to board-certified dermatologist Keira Barr: “Fasting not only reboots the gut microbiome, which helps [support a balanced inflammatory response] and improve skin health, but it also stimulates autophagy, our cells’ self-cleansing process that breaks down and recycles damaged molecules and cellular organelles, which contributes to cell longevity.”

Of course, fasting, even in this more gentle way, is not for everyone and including high quality, clean, whole, one-ingredient foods in your meals matters even more. Be sure you choose the best quality fuel to put into your body and you will get much better results, whether you choose to fast or not.

    That doesn’t surprise me at all, Ann. The health of our skin comes from the inside out. The best cleansers, creams, moisturizers, and masks mean nothing unless you’re hydrated, getting enough rest, nourishing your body, resting, and going outside.
