Watch the news on TV for 5 minutes and you’ll agree it’s no wonder depression and anxiety are reaching epidemic proportions in this country. While there have been numerous theories on what the cause of depression is, a recent study revealed something very interesting.
The study concluded that stressful and traumatic life events (who hasn’t had at least one!) are the cause of depression and anxiety. Well if that’s all the study revealed, we’d be back to square one. That would make us victims of our circumstances with no recourse. But it went on to say that the way the person perceives and thinks about the event determines how much stress it will cause them. That’s good news because we can learn to think differently about anything we choose to. We are not powerless to change this.
There are numerous ways to reprogram your thinking. The Bible calls it renewing your mind – see God knew this before the researchers ever figured it out! Another important factor is keeping your gut bacteria nourished. You have a second brain in your gut and probiotics have been found to help lower stress hormones and balance out moods.
If you are struggling with depression or anxiety, I hope you are encouraged to know that there are ways to change your thinking about things that have happened in your life that can make a huge difference in how you experience them today.
Are you aware of how your perception of events affects your moods?

Ann, isn’t it wonderful the Bible says we can be TRANSFORMED by renewing our minds! I love it when science catches up with the Bible. Merry Christmas, my friend!
Oh Debbie – I do too! That was exactly the premise of my devo Father Really Does Know Best! He created everything – how can scientists thing they are “discovering” anything!
I am always amazed by how our mind, body and spirit connected. I didn’t know that about probiotics, but I’m not shocked. I was watching a TED talk about growing new brain cells and learned that what you eat and how you exercise lead to growth. Actually, I think you would enjoy the talk if you haven’t seen it. Here’s the link. https://www.ted.com/talks/sandrine_thuret_you_can_grow_new_brain_cells_here_s_how?language=en
Thank you for sharing that Holly. Have a beautiful Christmas.
